Poet Witter Bynner came to Santa Fe in 1922 and remained a central figure in the town’s celebrated literary and art colonies. In 1923, Bynner purchased the modest cottage, eventually expanding it into the rambling home it is today.Bynner’s house became the central residence in a small art settlement at the intersection of Buena Vista and College Road, later renamed Camino de Las Animas and Old Santa Fe Trail. Members of the local art colony often socialized in Bynner’s home, where the poet hosted gatherings and readings by nationally known authors visiting Santa Fe. The Spanish Pueblo Revival Style home was expanded from an adobe cottage with extensive additions designed by architect Robert Hunt, son of California architect Myron Hunt. Today, the Witter Bynner House remains a private home and well-known bed-and-breakfast.
