ABOUT THE TALK
The New Mexico State Land Office is likely the largest landlord that you have never heard about. The agency oversees nearly 13 million acres of trust lands in New Mexico and leases these lands to generate funding for institutions such as public schools and universities. This presentation will share the history of the State Land Office, and the recent work that the agency is doing to identify and protect cultural resources such as archaeological sites, historic places, and sacred landscapes.

Ethan Orlando Ortega serves as the Assistant Commissioner of Cultural Resources for the New Mexico State Land Office. He has previously worked in various capacities with the Department of Cultural Affairs at Los Luceros, Coronado, and Jemez Historic Sites. In addition to his archaeological career, Ethan is currently working towards his PhD in History at the University of New Mexico.
