Please join the Historic Santa Fe Foundation at El Zaguán, 545 Canyon Road, on Friday, September 27, 2024, for a presentation and workshop on traditional limewash, its history, and uses in New Mexico. Limewash is a natural mineral coating that has been used for thousands of years around the globe as a protective and breathable finish coat to preserve and maintain earthen structures including Adobe buildings. The presentation and hands-on workshop will be conducted by Mac Watson, building preservationist and HSFF Property Committee member, and Jacob Sisneros, HSFF Preservation Projects and Programs Manager. Participants will learn the preparation, mixing, and application of traditional limewash on an actual adobe wall at HSFF’s El Zaguán.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS
Jacob Sisneros is a native New Mexican with roots in Albuquerque and a Santa Fe resident for twenty-five years. Jacob holds a bachelor's degree in Industrial Design from Rhode Island School of Design, and Architectural Studies from the University of New Mexico. Jacob comes to us with over a decade of experience as a designer and builder, and more recently as an educator and head of the Sculpture Department at New Mexico School for the Arts. Jacob has designed and built several homes in Santa Fe and Northern New Mexico and has a special appreciation for earthen architecture and preservation.

Alan ‘Mac’ Watson was born and raised in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Mac received an AB in English Literature from Dartmouth College and an MA and a PhD from the University of New Mexico. He taught English and directed the graduate program in English at Montana State University for several years before the lure of returning to Santa Fe became too strong to resist. Since 1975 he has worked in architectural conservation as a licensed contractor and principal of Watson Conserves, LLC. The firm was decommissioned in 2016, and Watson is now a full-time volunteer. He has volunteered for Cornerstones Community Partnerships for many years and was on the Cornerstones staff as program manager for Northern New Mexico from 1998-2002. He is a former chair of the Historic Santa Fe Foundation Board and has served as director of the Old Santa Fe Association and Santa Fe New Music. He was appointed by Governor Richardson to the state's Cultural Properties Review Committee and served for two years as Chairman. His HSFF Board Chairmanship expired in June 2019, after leading the Foundation through a very rigorous plan for its future.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION TO CONSIDER
It is essential to dress appropriately to ensure comfort and protection during the limewash workshop. Here are some recommendations on what to wear:

• Old Clothes: Limewash can be messy, so it's advisable to wear old clothing that you do not mind getting stained.
• Closed-Toe Shoes: Opt for sturdy, closed-toe shoes to protect your feet from any spills or accidents.
• Protective Gear: While limewash is generally safe and non-toxic, gloves and goggles or safety glasses are highly recommended.

By following these guidelines, participants can enjoy the workshop while minimizing the risk of damage to their clothing or personal injury.

PARKING
Parking on Canyon Road, Camino Escondido, and Delgado Streets as available. Paid lots are located on Delgado Street and on Canyon Road across from El Farol.

CHECK-IN & GATHERING LOCATION
Please check-in at the El Zaguán gift shop, 545 Canyon Road, Suite 2. The workshop will gather in the Daniel T. “Bud” Kelly Conference Room for introductions and a presentation.
