The Fort Marcy Officer’s Residence is one of two remaining officer’s homes of six constructed in the1870s by the US Army as part of the seventeen-acre Fort Marcy Military Reservation. The other existing officer’s residence is the Otero-Bergere House at 135 Grant Avenue (see Otero-Bergere House). When the US Army abandoned the post in 1894, the Territorial governor of New Mexico offered the houses rent-free to prominent local political families. The buildings were turned over to the City of Santa Fe in 1904. In 1917, attorney Frank Springer gave the house to the Museum of New Mexico and the School of American Research as a residence for the director, Dr. Edgar Lee Hewett. In 1972, the New Mexico State Legislature purchased the property for use by the Museum of New Mexico. The National Park Service placed the Fort Marcy Officer’s Residence on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 due to its architectural and historical significance.
